Undone

Everyone has their strengths. Those things that just naturally come easier to them than others.
I LOVE writing, but sometimes it is HARD. Finding the will to push through when the words won’t come, or sticking with it and rewriting the same chapter 20 times til it’s perfect is a LOT of work & it takes practice.
Or how about writing in a different genre? I’ve recently been thrown into the world of songwriting, and let me tell you, it is TOUGH.

Let me preface this by saying I am NOT  a poet. I never have been. My rhyme is hokey, freeverse confuses the HELL out of me, and even thinking about paring down a meaningful, deep piece in less than 300 words boggles my mind.

BUT, in my newest story (Days After I Died), my MC Callum is a singer/songwriter. Which was awesome, until I realized by extension, that made ME a singer/songwriter. Cue panic mode! So, after a good 30 minute session of ‘What the hell have I done, What am I going to do, I canNOT do this,’ I pulled on my big girl pants and sat down to write.

Here’s what I came up with:

UNDONE
VERSE 1
Lost and alone
can anyone hear me?
Silent screams
Begging you to save me.
I’m laying here,
Does anybody see me?

CHORUS
I’m pulling apart
Broken in pieces.
Forgetting who I was
Before I shattered,
Before I came undone.

VERSE 2
I’m always surrounded,
But I’m alone here
I scream out loud
sharing my fear,
But no-one hears
Nobody can hear…

I’m pulling apart
Broken in pieces.
Forgetting who I was
Before I shattered,
Before I came undone.

BRIDGE
And I walk on broken glass
Cant you hear my laughter
A scream inside a gasp
Alone’s my ever after

I’m pulling apart
Broken in pieces.
Forgetting who I was
Before I shattered,
Before I came undone.

I am undone.

TAG
Lost and alone
can anyone hear me.
Whispered cries
Begging you to save me.

I have to say, while I have no delusions that I will be the next Taylor Swift, for my first attempt at songwriting, I am pretty dang proud of myself. And while I won’t be abandoning my novels for lyrics anytime soon, it was a challenge, and I’ll daresay even fun (once I stopped freaking out) to push myself outside my comfort zone.

And that’s how we learn, that’s how we grow. One story, or song, at a time.

What do you think?
Should I try my hand at more? How do you strengthen YOU writing abilities?
I’d love to know!

  1. I would say keep at it. Taylor Swift has a clear pattern in all of her songs. I wouldn’t stress too much. Oddly, I have written three songs for far in my WIP. I still wish I knew Carole King so she could grace my pages with her lyrics.
